Learning about the food you should eat

Learning about the food you should eat

Back in October, I began the first of five modules of my Future Fit Advanced Nutrition and Weight Management online course.  After running the Chicago Marathon, I had a few days with my feet up recovering so I started chipping away at it.

Studying in my office with help from my personal assistant

I started off with the longest module, Nutrition and Weight Management.  I figured it would give me a good review of nutrition topics I had covered in my personal training course with more detail.  There were 16 lessons all together in this module, each of which took 20-30 minutes to complete.  For this course, I had to be online to play each lesson, which features an audio track of the text.  There are knowledge checks periodically within the lesson to see if you retained key bits of information or to see if you have prior knowledge about the next topic.  The information delivered so far is simply put and broken down into little chunks that were easy to digest.  If I didn’t finish a lesson, it would save my place and offer me an option to resume where I had finished or to start at the beginning of the module.  Before passing each lesson, you must complete a five question quiz and score 100%.  You can repeat the test immediately of you missed one or two questions but if you take too long to pass, you will have to log out and back in to restart.

Each lesson also has a resource folder which includes a transcript, relevant forms, and sometimes a glossary.  Any time I had a question, I could either email my tutor or submit a question through the website.  Most of my questions were around the technology side of things, rather than the course material, because computers are not my forte.  The Future Fit Training team were always quick to respond and very helpful.

No joke, this cookie is as big as my head.  And when I get stressed, I eat the whole thing.

Part of the course is a case study working with a client to help them learn more about their food habits and emotional links to eating.  It was actually hard to find a volunteer that was willing to work with me for eight weeks.  Through Twitter, I found two competitive male cyclists who wanted to drop some weight to improve their cycling performance.  One of them was travelling a lot of work and was unable to check in with me on a regular basis.  I am happy to say the other client was able to check in regularly and found the accountability very helpful.  He tracked his food three to four days a week for me and started choosing fruits and vegetables over convenient processed foods.  He didn’t loose any weight but he was sleeping better and feeling more energized during the day.

My tips for online study success?  Give yourself deadlines to complete each lesson or modules by writing them in your diary.  Think of them as exam dates that you cannot change.  Set aside studying time in your diary each week too.  I prefer to have the same slot every week (although that hasn’t be possible with marathon training the last two months) and keep plugging along but your schedule might be better to spend one day every other week.  Set up a place to study that is free from distractions- no TV, no music, no kids (or dogs) interrupting you.  You are taking this course to improve your health and knowledge, as well as to help your clients.  Make it a priority.  Have a notepad to take notes or print out the resource info to annotate as you go along.

Most of all, enjoy it!  All of the information will help you fuel your body properly, feel energized and maintain a healthy weight that is appropriate for you.  As they say, “health is wealth”.

Thanks to Future Fit Training for their support of furthering my nutritional education.  All opinions are honest and my own.

Learning new things is one of my passions.  Very rarely am I not enrolled in a course.  After university it was scuba diving.  Then I took chemistry classes part-time to apply for vet school.  I also did a nursing nutrition course when working at a hospital followed by a master degree in Zoo and Aquarium Management.  Since 2009 I have gained over a dozen health and fitness qualifications while maintaining my first aid certification.  I even did marketing and Instagram courses to learn how I can promote my business.

Over the last two years, my day job has been so full on that my in-person personal training and continued professional development want have had to take a back seat for a while.  My no-longer-new neighbourhood doesn’t have the demand for personal trainers like my old one did.  My work over the last year was a bit unpredictable as to when I would leave at the end of the day, but now things have calmed down a bit.  Plus I don’t have any specific marathons booked in (just working on my pace to get a BQ).

What am I going to do with all my free time? Never one to sit around and twiddle my thumbs, I have just signed up for Future Fit Training‘s Advanced Nutrition and Weight Management diploma (don’t tell my husband) which is certified by the Association for Nutrition.  It is an online program that covers the following modules:

  • Behavior Change Coaching
  • Childhood Nutrition and Obesity Prevention
  • Nutrition and Weight Management
  • Nutrition for Sport and Exercise
  • Pre and Postnatal Nutrition

My aim is to finish in one year.  Hopefully my coursework with Institute for Integrative Nutrition will give me a solid foundation of knowledge.  I have started with Nutrition and Weight Management, the longest module, which will have me doing a six week case study after I complete the lectures.  The course starts every Monday, so you can join at any time of year and make it work around your schedule.

When I complete the course, I will:

  • Become a specialist qualified Nutrition Adviser
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of nutrition and weight management
  • Have knowledge and insight into the role psychology plays when trying to change a client’s behaviour or habits
  • The skills and confidence to run your own weight management clinic, or offer individual consultations
  • An in-depth understanding of sports nutrition and the ability to provide appropriate nutrition advice to those with sport or exercise related goals
  • Specialised knowledge of how the principles of nutrition relate to women who are pregnant or breast-feeding

Also, with the new qualification, I will be able to take on more remote and digital coaching clients, as well as keep myself fit(ter).  Eating is the biggest thing that influences your body shape.  Sure, exercise is important, but it is much easier not to consume extra calories that to burn it off later.  I will be updating you about my studies over the next year so keep checking back to see how I am doing.  If you are interested in receiving nutritional advice, please fill out this form and I will get in touch.

Thanks to Future Fit Training for allowing me to enroll in their course.  All opinions and experiences are honest and my own.

Since finishing my bachelors degree, there has rarely been a time when I wasn’t studying part-time.  My career goal was to become an aquatic veterinarian so for several years I took classes part-time at the community college in my hometown to complete the prerequisite requirements.  But unfortunately, I didn’t get in.  I then found myself taking courses to become a nurse practitioner before realising I didn’t like people as much as animals.  Grad school came a few years later, then my spinning certification, personal training, and additional certifications, such as Coach in Running Fitness, along the way.  I enjoy learning new things in fields that interest me and enjoy the challenge of mastering new materials.  Plus, these courses are often great ways to meet other people with similar interests or who work in the same field as you.

Lately, I haven’t been keeping up with the fitness industry advancements.  As the day job isn’t allowing much time for part-time work in the gym, I find it hard to justify the expense of my time and money on fitness courses.  Plus, I would need to take time off from work to attend classroom sessions or to revise for final assessments.

I was intrigued when Future Fit Training contacted me to be one of the first to try out their new Pro Zone. Offering webinars, discounted online CPD, and networking opportunities, it is perfect for busy trainers like me.  It is a private Facebook group, meaning you can check in with the app you most likely already have on your phone.  Plus, checking Facebook is something you already do automatically so you don’t have to worry about remembering to log into a separate place.  Everyone in the group has been really friendly and willing to share tips and advice whenever someone posts a question.

Key benefits of membership include:

  • 12 accredited webinars per year
  • 25% discount on all Future Fit CPD courses
  • Membership of an exclusive online fitness industry group
  • Specialist guest webinars
  • Unique promotions and competitions
  • Engaging content to help maximise your PT skills and business

The webinars tend to be on Wednesdays ar 2pm, which unfortunately is while I am at work.  However, they are recorded for later viewing and emailed to you if you registered.  The first one I signed up for was about mindset training with the founder of the Body Transformation Academy.  There are many more that I cannot wait to see.  Here are a few examples:

It has only been two weeks since I have joined, and I am still getting used to navigating the group and having it be part of my daily check in.  I see tremendous value in it though for new PTs or PTs who are trying to grow their business.  I will be posting updates in the next few weeks on how I get on with it and what new stuff I am learning that will help you be healthy and happy.

When was the last time you took a class to learn something new?  Did you continue to pursue it after the course ended?
